Saturday 20 February 2010 - Elvis Day - Prestwick Airport

On 3rd March 1960 the undisputed king of Rock ‘n Roll, Elvis Presley, touched down at Prestwick Airport marking the first and only time he ever set foot on British soil.

Wednesday 3rd March 2010 is the 50th anniversary of this historic event and to honour it, Prestwick Airport have teamed up with Ayrshire based Zisys Events to arrange an Elvis Extravaganza!

On 3rd March 2010 the main terminal at Prestwick airport will play host to a multitude of Elvis related activities including a performance from the UK’s top ‘young’ Elvis impersonator, Lee Jackson, and a tribute to the king from the University of Strathclyde music students.

The Elvis Cleaning Company will also be on hand throughout the day – in full Elvis attire of course, to ensure the concourse is kept clean & tidy…

The festivities will begin at 10am when Elvis Presley will be arriving by plane. Scottish based performers, including Ayr based The MacDonald Brothers, will take to the stage throughout the day to perform their own unique interpretations of Elvis’s music. Elvis & his live band, The Train Wreckers, will then take to the stage at 14:30 followed by a plaque unveiling at 15:30.

The event is being supported by South Ayrshire Council, Spirit AeroSystems and Ayrshire based Diva Music.

Zisys Events company director Danny Anderson, who is organising the event, said:

“Elvis Presley is one of the most influential musicians to have lived. Prestwick Airport played a small yet significant part in his life being the only time he ever set foot in the UK. I felt it appropriate that Ayrshire formally celebrates this anniversary and I am delighted Prestwick Airport and many others have shown a similar desire to mark this historic occasion!”

This free event is open to the public as well as passengers flying in and out of the airport.
